Databases

The Library subscribes to a number of electronic databases. These databases are exclusively for the use of current students, faculty, and staff of The Art Institute. Under current licensing agreements, access to these databases by individuals who are not currently members of The Art Institute community is prohibited.

All of the following databases have a number of features which make searching them both easy and flexible. Basically, the search engine for each one uses keyword searching techniques. The advanced searching features available in each one are generally easy to use. Simply follow the database directions. For questions about search techniques, ask one of the librarians on duty.

Members of The Art Institute community who wish to access the subscription databases from off-campus sites must come to the Library in person and present a vaild ID card to obtain the username and password for the desired database.


Safari Technical Books Online

Safari® Tech Books Online features over 4,600 titles covering the technologies most essential to users in graphic design, certification, enterprise computing, Java, Linus/Unix, Web development, Windows, XML, and more. Users can search hundreds of books simultaneously online, saving time and quickly finding the information they need. On campus use only.




Oxford Reference Online

Oxford Reference Online Premium includes more than 170 dictionary, language reference, and subject reference titles in all major fields from the Oxford University Press, including the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations and the Oxford Companion series. The database can be searched using simple and advanced search techniques and is entirely cross-referenced. The Web site also contains a large number of useful links to sites on a wide variety of subjects.


Wilson Omnifile

WilsonWeb Omnifile Full Text Select is a periodical database that provides full-text articles, with their accompanying citations and abstracts, on topics in the arts, applied and pure sciences, social sciences, education, humanities, legal, and business fields. Coverage begins in 1994, and all of the more than 2,500 titles indexed are presented in full-text format.



Proquest

Proquest is a collection of periodical databases, including ABI/Inform Dateline and ABI/Inform Global which provide access to over 3,000 business publications, Proquest Newstand which includes access to major newspaper publications nationally, Proquest Psychology which contains more than 500 psychology journals in full text, and Proquest Research Library which maintains access to over 3,800 journals in a wide variety of academic disciplines. Access to Proquest requires username and password from campus or home. Members of the AiDallas community should ask at the Circulation Desk.



American Business Information

ReferenceUSA contains over 14 million businesses, listed by business name, business type, Yellow Page heading, key contacts, etc. The index may be searched geographically, by occupational subject, by company name, or by a wide variety of other criteria.



Lexis/Nexis Academic Universe

LexisNexis Academic includes general news items, legal decisions, company and financial information, medical and health research information, and general reference databases. The general reference databases provide basic biographies, state and country profiles, polls & survey results, quotations, and the World Almanac. On campus use only.


eLibrary

eLibrary is a comprehensive digital archive of information sources, including 2,000 full-text magazines and newspapers, classic books, maps, photographs, and major literary, art, and reference titles. It also includes television and radio transcripts, as well as transcripts from Congressional testimonies and historical documents.


First Research

First Research has 250+ industry and state profiles that include critical industry statistics, links to associations, talking points, recent developments and financial information. Searchable by Industry or State name, NAICS or SIC code. It is updated quarterly.


Hoover's Business Network

Hoover's Online Business Network provides proprietary information on 43,000 companies and industries, as well as business-related news, career development, and financial information. On campus use only.


Red Books Online

RedBooks Advertisers and Agencies Online is the online version of the standard bible of the advertising industry. It contains thorough information on nearly 14,000 U.S. and international advertising agencies, as well as 18,000 advertisers, including what accounts are represented, fields of specialization, and contact information on the principal agency and/or company personnel. On campus use only.



Thinkmap Visual Thesaurus

Thinkmap Visual Thesaurus, developed by Thinkmap, Inc., is a dictionary and thesaurus that provides intuitive schematic semantic and conceptual linkages between words. It contains over 145,000 English words and 115,000 meanings. Features include auditory pronunciation, a spell checker, and the ability to initiate Internet searches of individual words.



Oxford Art Online

Grove Dictionary of Art Online is an expanded online version of the 34-volume Grove Dictionary of Art and is now part of Oxford Art Online. The site also includes The Oxford Companion to Western Art, the Encyclopedia of Aesthetics, and The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art Terms.



Design and Applied Arts Index

Design and Applied Arts Index is the world's largest database dedicated to applied arts, design and craftwork. It provides annotated references to the contents of over 500 design and craft journals, as well as data on over 50,000 designers, craftpeople, studios, firms, and workshops.


AP Images

AP Images is an text and image database that contains over a hundred years of photojournalism from the Associated Press' print and negative library, as well as charts, graphs, and text associated with news events.
